About

Artist Craig Mathewson as a child, painting

Being an artist was always the dream. Some of my earliest memories are of drawing and painting, losing track of time in the wonder of making. While architecture became my profession, it also deepened my fascination with landscape, light, atmosphere, and the ways we experience space. Later travels through the Middle East and Central Asia expanded these interests, fostering a lasting curiosity about storytelling, sacred histories, pattern, and the relationship between people, the land beneath them, and the sky above.

These experiences continue to shape my practice. Growing up, I was captivated by both space exploration and biblical accounts of visions, angels, miracles, and divine encounters. Today, my work brings these worlds into conversation, exploring the intersection of sacred experience, speculative cosmology, and contemporary UFO/UAP culture. Through painting, I create spaces of contemplation that invite viewers to reflect on moments where the material and immaterial, the known and unknown, appear to converge.

Influenced by architecture and medieval art, my work reimagines historical encounters with mystery through a contemporary lens, creating opportunities for curiosity, wonder, and reflection in a time of profound cultural and technological change.
